After witnessing its industrial activity & output crimp as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, member-states of the European Union are bracing for a recalibrated strategy that would bring about a new normal for the EU’s sourcing of raw materials. Having recently published a report stressing the vulnerabilities and insecurity of Europe’s access to various raw materials, the European Commission has announced its intent to establish an alliance among its member states. While the reaction of member-states toward the alliance remains nebulous, the core objective, as per Brussels, would be to implement a strategy that promotes diversification in the EU’s raw material suppliers (by country), and coordinates investment to boost participation among EU member firms in the extraction and processing phases for specific metals and minerals.
