Tensions continue to deepen in Senegal as protest groups are banned from holding protest marches, following the announcement of the delay of the presidential election earlier this month. President Macky Sall announced the postponement of the election until December, and has faced opposition throughout the country, as highlighted by recent violent confrontations between protesters and authorities in Dakar. In a crackdown on rallies last week, three people were killed, and many more injured. The suspension, which was backed by Parliament, will effectively allow Sall to remain in power until his successor’s ascension, which will more likely than not be in 2025.
