Peruvians Head to the Polls to Pick a President

Peruvians will head to the polls on June 4th in a second round of voting to select the country’s next president.

Keiko Fujimori, daughter of disgraced former president Alberto Fujimori, took the first round with around 40% of the vote. In second place was former World Bank economist Pedro Kuczynski with around 22%.

There were doubts in the immediate aftermath of the first round as to whether Keiko Fujimori would be able to maintain her momentum in a second round where the field would presumably rally around her opponent. Keiko’s father remains an extremely divisive figure in Peru, with his 10-year rule from 1990-2000 alternatively credited for the country’s economic revival or democratic downfall, depending on who you ask. Alberto Fujimori is currently serving a 10-year sentence for authorizing the use of death squads during his reign, and in an effort to distance herself from her father, Keiko has promised not to grant him a pardon should she be elected president.
