How then do you explain the building of railways, highways and transit points along the Nepal, China border by China? I propose that China is interested, very interested in increasing trade with both India and Nepal (even if the market size in Nepal’s case is miniscule as compared to India), and it will attempt to grow its trade whether trilaterally (to everyone’s benefit), bilaterally (to the benefit of any two parties) or unilaterally to benefit China only. That Pushpa Kamal Dahal the erstwhile Comrade “Awesome” of the Nepali Maoists floated the idea, probably at China’s behest is immaterial. How the other big player in the field (India) will approach the game is the only unknown. Nepal has little choice but to paly along with whoever writes the rules.
