September 16, 2009 (AFP) - At least two police were injured on Wednesday when a female bomber blew herself up in an attack on the main street of Chechnya's capital Grozny.Grozny attack

"There are victims, the number is being specified," the spokeswoman for the local investigative committee, Mariam Nalayeva, told AFP.

"Two policeman from the Chechen interior ministry forces were injured. There are also casualties among civilians."

The attack occurred on Putin Street, one of the capital's busiest avenues renamed after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and seen as a symbol of Chechnya's reconstruction after two post-Soviet separatist wars.

The woman's head and other body parts were found at the scene, Russian news agency quoted security sources as saying.

There has been mounting violence throughout Russia's largely Muslim Northern Caucasus over recent months as Islamist militants wage a low-level insurgency against the pro-Kremlin local authorities.

In recent months, suicide bombing has returned to haunt the region as the weapon of choice for rebels and prompted fears that use of the tactics could spread to Moscow and other Russian cities.
